Did a @pafrenz Kopi Talk at Ci Yuan CC this morning. My theme was ‘Race, Multiracialism, and Singapore’s Place in the World’. I know from your responses to my recent posts on the Presidential Election and my visit to China, that these issues are on your minds.

We had a very candid discussion, and my fellow panellists Chan Chun Sing, Maliki Osman, and Janil Puthucheary, shared very personal anecdotes from their own experiences as a Singaporean from the Chinese majority, Malay minority, and Indian minority, with the 500+ attendees.

Janil’s analogy summed up the theme aptly. He was talking with an overseas friend about sharing a meal with a diverse group. In his friend’s experience, at the end of the meal, everyone takes out their wallet and pays for his or her own share. But in Singapore, it’s not uncommon for a scuffle to break out as people fight to pay for the bill and belanja everyone, because this is our way of caring for one another.
We need the honesty to recognise that our multiracialism is not yet perfect. But we also need the courage to continue working through our differences, expanding our common spaces, strengthening our ties, and most of all, looking out for fellow Singaporeans. – LHL (MCI Photo by Terence Tan)
