It is almost impossible to understand Howard Hodgkin’s work without understanding his connection to #India. His first visit was in 1964: ‘It proved a revelation. It changed my way of thinking and, probably, the way I paint.’ Indian works and motifs are fundamental to his personal collection, and appear repeatedly across a variety of media. #Elephants in particular proved hard for Howard to resist. He wrote of his fascination with the #animals: ‘the shifting volume and surface, the loose skin and the obvious structure inside it, the colossal weight which can defy gravity with a leap in the air then sink to the ground in a heap like a mountain.’ This October, some 400 items from Hodgkin’s personal collection will go on view in our #London galleries, before they are offered for #auction on October 24. ?#PortraitOftheArtist #Elephantsofinstagram
