This is on the back of winning two categories in the same competition last year, as well as winning the overall title. Of course, it goes without saying that competitions are entirely subjective and when entering we are at the mercy of the subjective opinions of the judges. When I saw that this was my only shortlisted image in the competition I did just assume that it was not to be my year, especially when viewing the other images in the same category. That being said I was delighted when the call came through though I was sorry that I was unable to attend the awards ceremony. It will surprise no-one to learn that the image was taken just a few miles from where I live and at exactly the same spot where I look last years’ winning image of a backlit mute swan. I always extol the virtues of working locally, not least because of the encyclopaedic knowledge that one can build of local species’ behaviour but also the environmental benefits, the understanding of the fall of light, one’s own responsiveness when the weather forecast is favourable and the value to giving a voice and worth to species which others pass by on their way to more ‘exciting’ subjects. As always a significant slice of luck was involved in its capture as I’d tried for a year to capture an image such as this during a year-long project with these birds. When that project was over and the corresponding feature published in BBC Wildlife magazine I then turned my attentions to my local swans. It was then and only then that the coots decided to perform right in front of where I sat. Just out of interest my favourite image from this years’ Bird Photographer of the Year Awards was @jamie_hall_photography stunning shot of a tawny owl coming in to land and I was delighted to learn that both he and @benhallphotography were also category winners. Congratulations of course to all of the other awarded entries @andyparkinsonphoto @birdpoty
