Photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James -Rüppell's griffon vultures tear into the carcass of a zebra whilst a white-backed vulture looks on. Feeding time at the carcass is aggressive and noisy. The higher ranking birds get the best cuts of meat, the others have to wait their turn and get what they can. Today is International Vulture Awareness Day - a day set aside to highlight these wonderful birds. Most vultures species in Africa and Asia are now critically endangered due to poisoning. In India and Asia the poisoning is indirect; vultures die when they consume diclofenac, a drug used to cure ailments in cattle. In Africa the poisoning is both deliberate and indirect and is predominantly pesticide poisoning. The result is one of the fastest declines of any family of species in history. Vultures are hugely important to eco-systems across the world and without them we will see a rise in scavengers that carry disease such as rabies. An increase in human instances of rabies has already been seen in India as a result of the vulture decline - without the vultures the feral dog population exploded and with that came an increase in rabies. So whatever you might think about them - love them becasue we need them. #vultureawarenessday
