Photo by @rezaphotography // #Turkey #Istanbul. The Moment After An understanding of the moment one wishes to capture sometimes comes after the event. For the past several months, I’ve been travelling from one end of Turkey to the other, between Europe and Asia, for National Geographic. I spent some time in Istanbul; I’m fascinated by the Bosphorus, this divide which separates two continents. I often worked on the bridge which spans this strait, a fragile link between two worlds. I wandered along the banks on the European side, observing the exuberant liveliness around me. I was drawn to the shouts of some swimmers. Despite all the warnings posted, a group of youths had decided to use a small boat as a diving board. The movement of the swimmer lends dynamism to this photo which remains of the series. It tells the whole story of Turkey: the fragile bridge in the background linking Europe and Asia, and the mosque on the Asian side as a symbol of the fracture between East and West. In the moment, one does not necessarily see it all come together, but after the fact, you understand what you had merely sensed at the time.
