Badger surrounded by midges – In all of the years that I’ve photographed at this particular badger sett this evening stands uniquely alone for the sheer number of insects that seemed to be swarming around Mr Badger. I usually carry some insect repellent with me as, being strawberry flavoured it seems that I am irresistible to midges and indeed all biting insects. Whilst I’m no fan of the horrendous chemicals found in insect repellents I do often consider it a necessary evil, to long waits on windless evenings otherwise can be excruciatingly frustrating. On this occasion though I was fully prepared and I was also fortunate that the wind direction meant that I was photographing the badger using backlighting which helped to reveal the full extent of the midgey swarm. The badger though, doubtless with a much larger pain threshold and more used to tolerating even the slightest level of discomfort, seemed largely unperturbed by them but did at least stop regularly to have a good scratch. I am however still yet to capture a clean image of the long sought after ‘badger rolls onto his back and comically scratches his belly’ image which has long been a goal of mine. Though I did witness this behaviour a couple of times on this evening the badger would usually do it whilst partially obscured but, it is the quest for moments such as these that keep me returning to the same species year after year. When sorting through the images later it was then simply a case of trying to find a clean composition that included the midges, preferably one where the badgers eyes weren’t obscured and of all of the images this one was one of the best.
