Shooting cultural portraits is something I've become fascinated with recently as a process of interaction and inherently learning more about myself as well as others. In places like Nepal where I speak the language it's much easier for me but since my Spanish is slim to none, Cuba was much more intimidating. I'm normally very timid and shy but in these types of situations it takes a sort of 'practiced courage' to connect with a stranger and raise your lens in a way that feels right. I'd say a third of the folks I approached were not into it and you have to respect that immediately. Most of the time it's nonverbal eye-contact or body language and you would be surprised how many people are actually delighted to give their time for a photo. Ideally I have time to be in a space for a long time and the subjects become used to my presence before taking a single shot. Capturing portraits of humanity whether it's your closest loved one or a stranger on the street is a practice that can teach you a lot about yourself. #cuba #havana #streetphotography #portrait
