“You zone out,” said @blessingiraldo, who is featured in the documentary @stepthemovie, which chronicles a step team at an all-girls school in #Baltimore. “Whoever you are, you become the #SuperSaiyan.” (Blessin is a fan of the Dragon Ball Z character.) “You go to a different realm.” And that, she said, is like #step, the percussive form that uses the entire body — from the voice to stomping feet and chest pats — to create sound. 3 members of her team, @lethalladies@notmyfor_tay (front), @justcorig (left) and @blessingiraldo — reunited at a basketball court facing the Hudson River to perform “Egyptian,” choreographed in 2015 by their coach Gari McInytre (@coachgstepislife). For Gari, step is not the same thing as dance. “It’s an art form on its own,” she said. “This is something that we as African-Americans have been doing for centuries.” As for the group’s name? @lethalladies was Blessin's handiwork. “It’s deadly and courageous and fearless,” she told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “But then we’re ladies at the same time. We’re all about women empowerment and being an example in our community. So danger and ladyhood — you can’t go wrong with that.” @jaibirdn made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance. #stepdance
