Coral reefs are some of the richest ecosystems on the planet. Despite being present on less than 2% of the ocean floor, they provide food and shelter to about a quarter of all known marine species. They’re also increasingly endangered — by overfishing, agricultural runoff, warming water temperatures and ocean acidification. But the @coralrestorationfoundation, located a few miles off the coast of Key Largo, Florida, has pioneered a method for growing #coral on treelike structures made from PVC pipes. More than 400 coral “trees” grow in its underwater nursery, including 5 threatened species. Researchers allow specimens to grow for 6 to 9 months — and to the size of a softball or a cantaloupe depending on its species — before taking them to the ocean, gluing them into place and using them to repopulate faltering reefs. @spencer_lowell photographed these coral “trees” at the @coralrestorationfoundation while on assignment for @nytmag in the #FloridaKeys.
