The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a storage facility dug some 400 feet into the side of a mountain on a Norwegian island near the North Pole. This subterranean safe house can hold up to 2.25 billion seeds and currently contains some 5,000 species of essential food crops. Its temperature is maintained at just below 0 degrees Farenheit, which is cold enough to keep seeds viable for decades, and perhaps even thousands of years. The seed vault is probably the best-known project in a growing global campaign to preserve a natural order that is fast disappearing. The plan is to study these specimens now but also to deliver them to the future, when scientists will presumably be more advanced than we are, technologically — and hopefully smarter. @spencer_lowell photographed the Svalbard Global Seed Vault while on assignment for @nytmag in Spitsbergen Island, Norway.
