In the stately Blue Room at City Hall in Manhattan yesterday, 5 members of Girl Scouts Troop 6000 stepped up to the lectern. Their news: #Troop6000, which was established in February at a homeless shelter in Queens, is now expected to serve about 500 girls at 14 additional shelters throughout NYC. The 27 members of the existing troop live with their families in a budget hotel that was converted into shelter space in Long Island City. Their story has helped bring attention to the plight of the city’s homeless children, who make up nearly 40% of the shelter system. “The girls ran the show like seasoned pros of the media circuit,” writes @samuelhodgson, who took this photo. During the press conference, Karina, Sanaa, Christina, Nayalynn and Tanae — ages 5 to 11 — talked about the troop’s origins, its expansion and what the #GirlScouts meant to them. What did Tanae, 5, like most about @girlscouts? After a long pause and a little help reaching the microphone, she said, “Everything.” Sanaa, 9, was not as shy: “We have been on TV a lot.” Follow @samuelhodgson to see more photos.
