Gerhard Richter's striking abstract #painting, Split (Rubble), 1989, is installed in our #London galleries ahead of Wednesday's Contemporary Art Evening Auction. The slick cascade of white pigment conjures natural phenomena, suggesting melting snowscapes and rockfall across remote mountain ranges. However, when considering the date of this painting's execution, the title takes on a secondary meaning. Created in the months leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9th November, 1989, the tumbling weight and downwards drag of slick oil paint seems also to anticipate this momentous historical event. #GerhardRichter #SothebysContemporary
