Old and new Masters standing side by side, ahead of this evening’s Actual Size #auction in #London. Known as a #portrait painter, Lucian Freud’s still-lifes are incredibly rare and highlight the influence the #OldMasters had on his painting. Dubbed the “Contemporary Old Master”, his fascination with the group was such that he was given his own key to roam the @national_gallery after it closed at midnight, taking his easel to study their work up close. Shown beside it, #Bosschaert’s exquisite depiction of #flowers demonstrates why he is known as the father of #still-life painting - its vibrant #petals shining as brightly today as they did in the early 17th century.
