U.S. Border Patrol is using surveillance equipment adapted from military use in Iraq and Afghanistan to create what some experts are calling a “virtual wall.” In Afghanistan, the surveillance tools were used to track the Taliban. But in some areas along the U.S. border, it can be as effective as a physical wall, at far lower cost. The arsenal includes towers, drones and aerostats — giant blimps attached to the ground that can hover as high as 5,000 feet. Helicopters using powerful infrared sensors and video cameras also patrol the skies. “Technology is definitively first,” said David Aguilar, a former acting commissioner of @customsborder. “These are things that can be used on any part of the border. There are places where you just can’t put a wall.” Watch our Instagram Story to see more photos by @misterwidmer, who rode along with #BorderPatrol agents and documented what happens when tools built for war are used at home.
