Like any professional #runner, Gabriele Grunewald (@gigrunewald) is competitive and fierce down the stretch. But a huge obstacle sets her apart: She’s battling #cancer for the 4th time. Last month at the annual Prefontaine Classic, one of track’s premier events, she slipped to the back. Coming out of the final turn, she scrunched her face and caught an Australian runner, nipping her competitor by half a second. But she still finished 9th out of 10. She came to a stop by a couple of reporters and her face broke into a rueful smile. “I was kind of in the race, even if I wasn’t really,” she said. @gigrunewald has a rare metastatic cancer. 9 months ago, surgeons cut a large tumor out of her liver, which left the scar seen in this photo by @chrislowphoto. They have since found 2 new tumors there. Less than 2 weeks after the Prefontaine, the 31-year-old began daily chemotherapy sessions. “I’m a young adult with cancer,” she said. “I don’t always love talking about it. It’s not a made-for-TV movie. It’s real. It’s scary.” To receive a serious cancer diagnosis is to feel an overpowering desire to retreat within, but @gigrunewald made the decision to crawl out.
