Can animals predict earthquakes? A scientist working in #Italy is hoping to find out. After a series of powerful #earthquakes struck the country last year, Martin Wikelski rushed there to test a hunch that has tantalized scientists and thinkers for ages. He happened upon the Angeli farm, which sells cheese produced by the family’s #sheep and cows. Martin, a German scientist, tagged several animals there to monitor their behavior. His hope is that if it changed in some consistent way before an earthquake, it could be used as an early warning system and potentially save thousands of lives. @nadiashiracohen photographed Florindo Angeli and his son removing a tag from one of the Angeli sheep in April. “It really looks as though something is there,” Martin said excitedly this spring, when he returned for the findings. His hope is that once the animal data is compared with the earthquake data — using earthquakes of a magnitude of 4 as a cutoff — it will show distinctive behavior before, during and after a quake.
