Photographers often see New York City through a romantic lens, as a city of human dignity under duress. Less often does NYC appear as a place of real estate developers or striding bankers, financial advisers or hospital system administrators, however much these people affect the urban landscape. In @josephmlopez’s photos, the contours of this empowered class surface indirectly, in the faces of those living under its sway. Last year, @museumofcityny commissioned him to photograph 20 NYC neighborhoods, looking at 5 challenges for the future: getting around, living together, living with nature, housing a growing population and making a living. The 43-year-old photographer went out in the early mornings and at dusk, when the light itself embodied the imminence of change. As a photographer, @josephmlopez is not immune to the forces he documented. The assignment, he said, was a dream commission. “I wish I still had it,” he said. “As opposed to how difficult it is to sustain yourself as a photographer in New York.” Visit the link in our profile to see more photos.
