Last year, the #Maldives hosted 1.2 million visitors. But this island paradise made news this spring for a reason other than its pristine beaches: the gruesome killing of the 29-year-old liberal blogger Yameen Rasheed, who was a strong voice against growing Islamic #radicalization. By some accounts, the #Maldives supplies the world’s highest per-capita number of foreign fighters to extremist outfits in Syria and Iraq. While the government has introduced new policies on terrorism, critics say the initiatives are mostly cosmetic. And the Maldives’ unusual approach to tourism — a single island houses a single resort — means that entire islands without robust security teams are vulnerable to being seized. The tourism industry has mostly remained off limits as a target for terrorism, but security experts say many resorts are ill equipped to fend off an attack on par with those that have occurred in places like Tunisia and Bali, Indonesia. @adamjdean took this photo of a sunset on Kandooma, home to the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.
