Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Conspicuous mountain hare – When I spent a month with the mountain hares earlier this year it gave me the opportunity to work with them in all conditions and in all light. Often times there was little to no snow on the hills and so this allowed me to create some more contextual images, revealing how the snow free landscape might, and probably will, have a significant impact on the long term survival of this species. The success of a species in the long term is often dependent on how well they are able to adapt to significant change and the relative suddenness of this shift in weather patterns could be one of the most serious threat posed to this species over the millennia. In order to make these kind of images more effective the temptation was often to work with the very whitest hares, those whose natural pelage has transitioned rapidly from being the greatest asset to potentially becoming the greatest liability. Of course a lot of this is simply conjecture at the moment and there is probably an absence of compelling data to support the notion but it’s a reasonable assumption to make that an animal that relies on camouflage to avoid the detection of the multiple predatory species that prey upon it is likely to become more vulnerable if that camouflage suddenly becomes the polar opposite of its evolutionary intention. Producing images such as these I again use manual exposure when the light is consistent as the amount of white in the image will vary depending on the size of the hare. If this hare suddenly decided to stand or stretch then on aperture priority I would get fluctuating readings, even though the required exposure is exactly the same.
