Photo by @gordonwiltsie // When Lewis and Clark first paddled up the Missouri River into central Montana they were astonished by herds of bison that seemed to stretch to the horizons. Within just decades these animals were virtually wiped out and driven from the prairies into mountain habitats like Yellowstone National Park. These bison that I photographed last week, however, are part of a herd of more than 600 animals that has been reintroduced to their native habitat by the American Prairie Reserve, a remarkable private conservation effort that is striving to build the largest nature reserve in the lower 48 - bigger even than Yellowstone. In just 16 years since their founding, they have acquired more than 500 square miles of formerly hard scrabble ranch lands and BLM grazing leases, much of it adjacent to the huge, existing Charles Russell National Wildlife Refuge and Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. The entire reserve is open to the public, with the long term goal of recreating the “American Serengeti” that once existed there, including wolves and grizzly bears that once called it home. It has been called this the greatest conservation effort of our time. #greatestplains #buildyourpark #prairie #conservation #bison #montana @americanprairie
