We managed to steal a bit of time, freeing ourselves briefly from our duties, and we set off together along the Seine. A moment of respite. The sky was clear. I watched the shadows forming. I began thinking of the Chinese shadow puppet theaters which had fascinated me when I was little, and which I rediscovered in Cambodia years later, during a reportage on the last shadow puppet master.
Here, I sought to photograph a different Paris, a far cry from the “picture postcard.” In the foreground, I saw her. The curve of her shoulder in contrast with the crystal clear sky but for the mark of a passing jetliner. In profile, she seems to be facing the city, where one can just make out the Eiffel Tower in the distance. A woman and the city – a tribute to femininity and its mysteries.
