This is yet another reason why I will always extol the virtues of working close to home and that is the encyclopaedic knowledge that you will build up of your local subjects likely behaviours. When a coot is about to explode into a territorial charge it will always drop first into a menacing threat posture, moving purposefully along the surface of the water, head down but full of intent. At any point during that threat posture the coot will suddenly explode into a pursuit and it is catching this first moment of power that will give you the best chance of capturing the whole sequence. The trick then of course is to try and keep up with the coot, ideally trying to have the coot running into the negative space in the image. This is probably the hardest part of catching this sequence and as you can see from this centrally placed coot it was something that I was unable to achieve in this moment. Nevertheless I do like the mid-air posture of the coot, the dawn light and the thin veil of mist that is still shrouding the lake. If it isn’t something that you do already then working locally is certainly what I would, and do, spend my time prioritising. There is always a new image, a new experience, the light is always unique and so will be the resulting images.
