Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Badger backlit by evening sunlight – I took this image two nights ago and whilst the badgers and foxes that both share the same extensive sett are all safe this image is tinged with a little bit of sadness for me. This is because in 15 years this is the first time that I’ve been able to work in this part of the sett as this is the first year that the badgers have started emerging early enough. Even so this opportunity has now sadly passed as I leave for Mid Wales today and by the time I return the bracken in this part of the forest will make photography impossible, it’s young fronds already emerging rapidly from the forest floor. Nevertheless I leave for, hopefully, an even better opportunity as I’ve learnt of a fox earth close to where I grew up in Mid Wales and even though I’m leaving both fox and badger cubs here I believe that the opportunity in Mid Wales is too good to pass up. I speak often of the need to not only find wildlife but to find it in the right location and with no species is this more important than with fox cubs. Whilst the fox earth that I am travelling to work at will see little beautiful light I know that it will remain completely undisturbed and that I will be able to erect two hides either side, depending on which direction the wind will be blowing. I ordered yesterday two low level hides from @kevinkeatley_photography http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk and so, for a while at least I might be dropping slightly off the radar. I’ve processed a few images which I can hopefully post over the coming days but if I do go a little quiet then you’ll know that I’ll be lying in a hide somewhere, hopefully with a few young fox cubs playing just a few metres away. For now I'll leave you with one of my badgers, photographed with my 600mm F4 lens and in late evening sunlight.
