Puffin in the rain – I’ve now got only one place left for my 2017 photo tour to the Scotland’s Shetland Islands and so if experiencing these wonderfully charismatic birds is on your wish list then please do contact me at tours@andrewparkinson.com for more details. This is where I captured this image during a brief rain shower and whilst it’s still very much a standard portrait being able to photograph him against the dark background of distant cliffs does at least helps the puffin to stand out. Using a dark background is also of benefit if you’re trying to include the rain drops as they tend to get lost against lighter backdrops. When including rain in my wildlife images I do tend to prefer shooting them at a faster shutter speed, thereby revealing them as rain drops, as opposed to rain streaks, but this is something that is best achieved through trial and error and down to your own personal preference. I know a lot of pro photographers that like to use as slow a shutter speed as possible, thereby rendering the rain drops as long streaks but I always find these to be a little distracting. As such I always encourage those with whom I work to photograph to their own personal tastes and to produce images that reflect their own personal interpretation of the world that they see. This is what makes photography so unique and so creative and whilst I would never consider myself an artist I guess that this unique interpretation is why some photographers do.
