French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme’s interpretation of the story of Bathsheba was painted at Bougival in 1889, where the artist worked ‘on the roof of his summer atelier, enabling him to pose his model in the open air and obtain wonderful effects’. The topography is left deliberately vague, allowing Gérôme to focus on Bathsheba’s contrapposto pose, the fabrics draped over the stool and worn by her attendant, and the soft natural light as the sun begins to set. To be offered as part of our 19th Century European Paintings auction in #London on 6 June. #Sothebys19thC #ArtofTheSeason
