Appearing at auction for the first time, and unseen in public since it was exhibited in Stockholm in 1967, ‘My Father’ by #Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck was painted in the final years of her career. While Helene produced numerous portraits of her mother Olga, her late father, Svante is a much rarer subject. Svante died from tuberculosis in February 1876 when Helene was aged just 13, some 70 years before this portrait was painted. To create a likeness in 1943, Schjerfbeck worked from memory and from a daguerreotype of her father produced in the 1860s.
