South African artist Irma Stern is revered for the sumptuous still lifes she painted in her Cape Town studio, and ‘Sunflowers’, from early 1942, is one her finest. It also has a fascinating history. The Second World War prevented the artist from returning to Europe, and her wanderlust inspired travel within Africa instead. She travelled to Congo in the summer of 1942 and took this painting with her to exhibit in Elisabethville (present-day Lubumbashi). Two years later, it was purchased by Sir Ernest and Lady Oppenheimer and hung at their Johannesburg estate, Brenthurst, before being sent to England in the 1950s. This is one of the star lots of Sotheby’s inaugural sale of Modern and Contemporary African Art in #London on 16 May.
