The artist Ellsworth Kelly died in his home in Spencertown, New York, in December 2015. It had been just 2 days since the 92-year-old and his partner, Jack Shear, hosted Jasper Johns and Terry Winters, among others, for Christmas. That year, Ellsworth had 10 completed paintings on his studio walls. They’ll go on view for the first time tomorrow at the @matthewmarksgallery in Chelsea. A companion show next door will include 25 images of flowers, fruit, vegetables and leaves dating from 1949 to 2008, most never before exhibited and often drawn without the pencil’s ever leaving the page. Last month, before the paintings were shipped to the gallery, Jack invited one of our writers to the expansive @ellsworthkellystudio and offices in Spencertown, where nothing — not even a paintbrush — has been moved since the artist’s death. There, the photographer @lrnlncstr took this photo of Jack peering into a model Ellsworth had been working on. Visit the link in our profile to read more about #EllsworthKelly, who remained abstract to the end.
