Before mass vaccination programs began in the 1940s, yellow fever ranked among the largest public health threats in #Brazil. Now, as fears spread over the resurgence of #yellowfever, health officials have a warning: Stop killing the #monkeys. In panicked reactions to the outbreak, people have been clubbing monkeys to death. Some monkeys were found dead with fractured skulls after having been attacked with stones. One was burned to a crisp. But infectious disease specialists say people are taking aim at the wrong target: Mosquitoes, not monkeys, are actually the vector for the virus. The people killing monkeys are making matters worse: they’re depleting primate populations that serve as beacons for where yellow fever is spreading. As epidemiologists monitor yellow fever’s advance, monkeys are still turning up dead, either at the hand of man or as a result of the virus. Researchers yellow fever is threatening species already at risk of extinction, like the golden lion tamarin — photographed here by Dado Galdieri. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
