Is China the world’s new colonial power? The rising superpower’s gravitational pull can be felt today in every nook of the globe. But few countries feel the tug more strongly than #Namibia, a wind-swept nation with a population of 2.4 million. While on assignment for @nytmag, the photographer George Georgiou took this photo of mass housing constructed by a Chinese company on the outskirts of #Swakopmund, near the Husab Uranium Mine — the world’s second-largest uranium mine. The desert where the mine has materialized used to be known only for its Welwitschia mirabilis, a short, droopy national plant that can live for more than 1,000 years. Now, in little more than 1,000 days, China’s reach has spread far beyond the mine. Just north of Swakopmund, a Chinese telemetry station sprouts from the desert floor. 25 miles south, a state-owned Chinese company is building an artificial peninsula. The question of how China is changing the world is often framed as a binary proposition: Is China the savior for developing nations, or is this the dawn of a new colonial era? In Namibia, and elsewhere, the narratives live uncomfortably side by side. Visit the link in our profile to read more in @nytmag.
