Welcome to #Weimar, Germany. This block of apartments, photographed here by @lauraboushnak, is now home to Haifaa, Schireen and Mahdiya Ibrahim, refugees from Syria. Until last summer, they all shared a room in a refugee shelter — along with Haifaa’s children. Unlike most of the roughly 95,000 refugee women who poured into #Germany in 2015, these 3 came without husbands, fathers or brothers. They and other refugee women told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists about the extra layer of challenges they face in adapting to German social customs, from organizing playdates for their children to having platonic friendships with men. In Syria, none of the sisters worked. Haifaa has turned down job offers to help a costume designer with sewing and to clean a cafe after hours in Weimar. “You need to become independent,” a German woman told her. Haifaa shot back: “We are not happy with just sitting around at home with nothing to do. … We want to learn. But first we need the language.” Visit the link in our profile to read more about integration in Weimar, which absorbed 900 refugees in a year.
