Ana Vitória da Silva Araújo acts like a typical 1-year-old. She smiles and babbles. She plays with a stuffed whale. Her brother, João Lucas, doesn’t seem to be aware of her. He behaves like a newborn baby. But João Lucas and Ana Vitória are twins. While their mother was pregnant, she was bitten by a #Zika infected mosquito. João Lucas was born with #microcephaly and other serious problems. For some reason, the virus that attacked his brain in the womb spared his sister. The siblings are one of 9 sets of twins identified in Brazil’s #Zika crisis, and scientists hope they can shed light on how the virus works. Determining why one twin became infected in the womb while the other didn’t may illuminate how Zika crosses the placenta, how it enters the brain, and whether any genetic mutations make a fetus more resistant or susceptible to Zika infection. @adrianazehbrauskas photographed the twins with their mother, right, and a neighbor’s cousin, Valéria Gomes Ribeiro, who is now João Lucas’s caretaker.
