“We are not a violent team,” said Fernando Madureira, the captain of Canelas 2010, an amateur #soccer team in Porto, Portugal’s vibrant second city. “We play the same as everyone else: We do not want to lose, we run, we fight for the ball, and we give everything on the field.” But that’s not how the club’s opponents see it. They refuse to play the team, which is known for its apparently gratuitous acts of violence on the field. But more chilling is the anonymous testimony of former opponents. Canelas members have a habit, more than one said, of warning rivals and referees that they “knew where their families lived.” Normally, such threats might be regarded as empty bombast, but not with #Canelas. Fernando is more than just the team’s captain; he’s also the leader of the Super Dragons, the largest, most powerful and most feared of @fcporto’s ultra groups (hard-core supporters). Most of his teammates also hold posts in the highest ranks of the ultras. Fernando’s take? “It would be discrimination if you did not let an African, a Gypsy or a Chinese person play,” he said. “So why is it different for a Super Dragon?” @danirodriguesphoto took this photo of Fernando during an @fcporto game in April.
