50 years ago, the idea of the rock festival was hatched with a simple but bold ambition: to get as much respect as jazz. Lou Adler, the #LosAngeles record producer and ageless hipster photographed here by @jokemichaels, ran with the idea. In the spring of 1967 Lou, Paul McCartney and the Mamas and the Papas discussed what eventually became the Monterey International Pop Festival. The festival, which was held that June, was pivotal in rock’s evolution as a force in the entertainment business and the culture at large. It defined the spirit of the Summer of Love. “Everybody was there,” said Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead. “Everybody but the Beatles.” Now Lou is working on a new version of the event to celebrate its 50th anniversary, which will lead a wave of commemorations for Monterey Pop’s half-century. Visit the link in our profile to read more about the new festival, and how the original came to life. #?
