When @ashgilbertson, a photographer with @viiphoto, entered Ritsona, 50 miles north of Athens, a young man approached, smiling. “My name is Bassem Omar, the King of Ritsona,” he said. His Majesty is a 20-year-old refugee from Qamishli, Syria; his kingdom is a camp home to 700 refugees — some of the 50,000 or so trapped in limbo in Greece since Europe slammed its borders closed a year ago. Even the King of Ritsona has tried to escape. “I’ve tried to get away 13 times,” he told @ashgilbertson. “I’ve spent 3,000 euros, all my money, on fake IDs. I’ve tried to fly to Holland with passports from France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and every time the police at the airport catch me.” Like many others, His Majesty is awaiting relocation. “Nobody wants to stay here. There’s no opportunity here,” he said. “Even the Greeks leave Greece to find work. What’s here for us?” While on assignment for @unicef, @ashgilbertson photographed Bassem Omar looking out over the Ritsona refugee camp. Visit the link in our profile to read more in #nytopinion.
