A year and a half ago, Boko Haram — the Islamist fighters who have rampaged across northeast Nigeria — kidnapped and conscripted Amina, photographed here by @ashgilbertson. Amina, only 16 at the time, was told that she’d have to marry one of the fighters. But first, she'd have to accompany them on operations and help kidnap other girls. If she didn’t cooperate, she’d be killed. With guns blazing, fighters would enter a village kill and kidnap men, expecting Amina and other girls to round up the young women. Kidnapping victims were easy to find. “When the girls would hear the gunshots, they’d run into their rooms and hide,” said Amina, who kidnapped 3 girls on her first outing with the fighters. Sometimes she would cry as she worked, dragging sobbing and screaming girls into waiting vehicles. “I feel so guilty,” Amina, now 18, told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. Today she sells detergent and broth with her mother — the only one who knows her secret. But she hears awful sounds in her dreams. One of the terrified girls Amina helped to abduct was 14. 3 weeks later, the girl was dead after being gang raped. “I think about her a lot,” Amina said, swallowing hard and closing her eyes.
