For 8 months a year, the flat bay around the village of Kangiqsujuaq in far northern #Quebec freezes. Throughout the winter the Inuit hunt seal and caribou, and they fish through the ice for Arctic char. But in the coldest months, some venture beneath the ice to gather #mussels — once a lifesaving source of food during the lean frozen months, and now a welcome winter treat. Every 2 weeks the pull of the moon combines with geography to create unusually large tides. In some places, the water falls as much as 55 feet. Earlier this month, the photographer @avelkaim and our reporter Craig Smith joined Tiisi Qisiiq and Adami Alaku, who identified a void and chopped a hole into the ice. Underneath: a beautiful, eerie world of bending ice, glowing blue from the sunlight outside. The sound of trickling water filled the humid, salt-laced air. It was -20°F (-29°C) outside but a balmy 32°F (0°C) beneath the ice. The ground was covered with kelp, the occasional crab and edible clumps of roe. But Tiisi and Adami were there for fat blue mussels clinging to the rocks. Before long, the sound of ticks and pops signaled the returning tide. Soon, the water would fill the caverns.
