Josh Tillman had recorded 9 albums under the name J. Tillman when he had an epiphany, prompted by his first (but not last) experience with a hallucinogenic drug: he should change his name as a way of rebooting his career. He was unsatisfied with the somber, sedentary folk songs he’d been making — “sad bastard music,” he called it — and wanted to spring his sense of humor, his absurdity and his playfulness. The moniker he unveiled: Father John Misty. “People hear it and it fills them with loathing, ‘What kind of [chump] calls himself Father John Misty?’ ” Josh told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, “But when I hear it, it makes me laugh. It never gets old.” The 35-year-old musician’s new album, “Pure Comedy,” comes out on April 7. To focus on the songs, he gave up booze, drugs, cigarettes and meat. I needed all my wits about me if I was going to take on these issues,” he said. But now, he’s abstaining from abstinence. “I didn’t like it,” Josh said with a theatrical shrug. “Not for me. When the ledgers of history are drawn up, I’ll be on the side of the smokers and the masturbators. Those are my people.” @andrewwhitey took this portrait of Josh Tillman, aka #FatherJohnMisty, at the @boweryhotel.
