While working on a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ article about civilian massacres by the Nigerian military, our reporter @dionnesearcey and the photographer @ashgilbertson heard reports that soldiers were burning villages. “The militant group Boko Haram, too, has been accused of setting fire to homes,” @dionnesearcey writes, “but residents told us the military had now adopted the tactic as a way to clear the countryside so it could freely carry out operations against the insurgents.” When the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists flew over an area of Borno State in a @unitednations helicopter, they saw the charred remains of villages like this one. Famine-like conditions are raging in the area, a region with a rich history of agriculture. But humanitarian groups are facing huge challenges in getting supplies to people in need.
