Several times a week, Vera Lúcia da Silva wakes up in the dead of the night to travel 2 and a half hours from her home in Escada, Brazil, to the city of Recife. The trip is the only way to get the treatment and therapy for her baby, Sophia Valentina, who has problems caused by the #Zika virus. Just over a year old, Sophia is one of nearly 2,500 babies in #Brazil born to infected mothers. Although public alarm about the virus is receding, for families of Zika babies, the disastrous effects are only deepening; the difficulties only beginning. One clinic dropped Sophia from a physical therapy group when doctors said she wasn’t developing. One morning, Sophia stopped moving. She was breathing, her eyes were open, but her body seemed frozen. Along with #microcephaly, Sophia has serious dysphagia, swallowing problems afflicting older Zika babies whose brains can’t coordinate skills for eating. She may need a feeding tube. “God,” her father said, “would never give us 100 kilos if we could only carry 50 kilos.” But the weight keeps piling on. @adrianazehbrauskas photographed Sophia with her 5-year-old brother.
