Meet Diego. Over the years, his sex drive has saved his species, Chelonoidis hoodensis. This giant tortoise and his offspring are part of a high-profile effort to keep #tortoise populations thriving in the Galápagos Islands, the world’s laboratory of evolution. So often here, the fate of an entire species can hinge on whether just 1 or 2 individual animals survive from one day to the next. Of all the giant tortoises on these islands, only a few have received names that stuck. There was Popeye, adopted by sailors at an Ecuadorean naval base. There was Lonesome George, last of his line, who spent years shunning females before he died in 2012. And there’s Diego, who’s quite the opposite of George. After 4 decades in the breeding pen, his face is an old yellow color and his shell looks like a house that could use a new coat of paint. But Diego has fathered hundreds of progeny — conservative counts say 350, but more imaginative estimates say about 800.
