This was beautiful, sunny Sunday spent writing outdoors and cooking indoors. At this time of the year, not only we're (briefly) blessed by trees in flowers, but also with bitter orange trees that make the Eternal City look like it's Christmas eternally! ?Citruses grow galore in Italy (garden writer Helena Attlee has written a book called "The Land Where Lemons Grow" in regard), but these urban bitter oranges are very snubbed by Romans. My dear friend @alicekiandra.adams the owner of #LatteriaStudio harvests these oranges with the help of young African immigrants and they make jams and sell them! The same type of bitter orange is cultivated in the north of Iran and its juice is used as the condiment for many local dishes. I have picked up some of these oranges (we call them nārenj) for the fish dish that we make for #Norouz, the Persian new year on March 21st. (I scrubbed the skin very well, so no health hazards. Relax). There's story about cooking for Norouz in Rome that I'll be sharing soon. Meanwhile you can see more of these trees in today's ig stories.
