“My father worked so hard that it broke my heart,” writes @thevaleriejune, the singer-songwriter who has described her style as “organic moonshine roots music.” In this week’s @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, she writes about the experience of losing her father, whose life “seemed to be fully focused on his family and his businesses.” A few years ago, her fears about his health came true: Her father suffered a major heart attack and learned he had heart disease; then not long after, he had a stroke that greatly affected his brain. When her family learned that he had about 3 years to live, @thevaleriejune writes, “I was determined to make them the best.” Her father died on November 14, at the age of 63. “We held hands in a circle around him and sang songs from our childhood,” @thevaleriejune writes. “We sang songs we used to sing at church and songs we used to sing to get through the hard work days. I was holding my father’s hand when I felt his spirit leave his body.” The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @ceniola0 took this portrait of #ValerieJune, who has a new album, “The Order of Time.”
