A mural on the side of a building in Dawson City, in Canada’s remote #Yukon Territory. In the late 1800s, Dawson was the booming center of the Klondike gold rush. Those days are long gone, but in many ways, gold continues to make its mark on this small town. During the summer months, tourists flock to Dawson to go on panning expeditions and mine tours. And murals like this one — “Yet somehow life’s not what I thought / And somehow the gold isn’t all” — are everywhere. Yet the “Spell of the Yukon” goes deeper: Some locals told the photographer @ashadamsphoto that they went to Dawson for a summer and never left, charmed by small-town life on the Yukon River. @ashadamsphoto traveled to Dawson, a rest stop on @officialyukonquest, a 1,000-mile dogsled race. Mushers, she said, like that the trail is so remote, with just 11 checkpoints. This year, just 21 mushers competed, and only 18 made it to the checkpoint in Dawson. We’ve been sharing @ashadamsphoto’s from #DawsonCity this #nytweekender. Follow @nytimessports and @ashadamsphoto to see more.
