In 2005, tourist visas brought Wei Lee and his parents to San Francisco from Brazil, where his parents, who had emigrated from China, once ran a restaurant outside São Paulo. They remained in the United States. after the visas expired. But after Wei was mugged and beaten in 2013, he received a U visa, which is reserved for victims of crime. (His parents, though, are still undocumented.) Today, Wei works with Asian undocumented youth. “Some people misunderstand, they think people come here and overstay their visas intentionally, but there are all these push and pull factors,” said the 28-year-old, who was photographed in San Francisco by @elizabethdherman. “My parents had to make a decision for their lives.” Right now, there may be no more powerful symbol of how fixedly Americans associate illegal immigration with Mexico than President Trump’s proposed wall. But many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. aren’t Mexican; almost a quarter aren’t even Hispanic.
