Roxham Road is usually a quiet country road in upstate New York. But recently, residents have noticed traffic picking up. Canadian border officials and aid workers say that since President @ドナルド・トランプ was elected, there’s been a surge in illegal crossings here — often natives of Muslim countries making bids for asylum. They're not trying to sneak over the border. They intend to get arrested. “Once they get arrested, they’re already on Canadian soil,” said Jean-Sébastien Boudreault, the president of the Quebec Immigration Lawyers Association, “so we have to let them do a refugee claim.” Last Thursday, when one Turkish family approached the border, a Canadian Mountie told them that it wasn’t legal to cross. “I apologize about this,” the father replied, his voice unsure, “but I have to break your rules.” He paused. “I’m sorry.” Later on, @heislerphoto photographed this woman and her son, also from Turkey, hopping across the narrow creek that divides the 2 countries. After this photo was taken, an officer helped the little boy climb up the bank of the creek. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
