A photo and story to celebrate Wolrd Wildlife Day!! A #jaguar walks through tall grass within a large enclosure at the Experimental Jaguar Breeding Center, in the Esteros del #Iber, #Argentina, where scientists of the Conservation Land Trust Argentina (CLTA) are working to re-introduce the jaguar (locally known as yaguaraté) to these vast wetlands and grasslands. This male, named Nahuel, is from an Argentine zoo…he will mate with a female at the Center and their young will eventually be released into the wild. Jaguars were hunted into extinction in Iberá and the rest of Corrientes Province early in the last century, and the species is critically #endangered in Argentina,- the Iberá region is the best opportunity in Argentina for restoration of the species. CLTA is working to re-introduce many other species to the Esteros del Iberá- the most ambitious #rewilding project in the Americas- and is working with the Argentine government to create Iberá National Park, which will be the largest national park in the country. CLTA is part of the Tompkins Conservation family, founded by conservationists and philanthropists Doug and Kris Tompkins, who have protected over 2.2 million acres of wild lands in Argentina and Chile.
