Cheerleaders from Elmore County High School in Eclectic, Alabama, huddled to help keep warm before the Mystics of Time parade last weekend in Mobile. The Mystics of Time is one of dozens of mystic societies in Mobile, which is home to the oldest Carnival in America. Our staff photographer @damonwinter spent 5 days in the Southern city to capture some of the celebration’s spirit: parades, balls and coronations. Each year, the Mystics of Time names one member “Father Time” in honor of his service to the organization. The Mystics of Time and many of the 71 other mystic societies that organized events this year are secretive. Members need to be born into some; other groups invite residents to join, and still others accept anyone who pays the dues. Watch our #InstagramStory to see more photos.
