Long before New Orleans was New Orleans, another Southern city — Mobile, Alabama — was celebrating #MardiGras. Today, the city's festivities begin in November and stretch on for months. Its Carnival, the oldest in America, is filled with balls and parades. This year, 72 organizations, called mystic societies, participated. “Each society has some royalty, either a king or queen or a leading lady, often chosen for the time, talent and resources given to the society by their family over the years,” says Judi Gulledge, executive director of the Mobile Carnival Association. “It is a reward for longevity.” The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @damonwinter took this photo of Queen Victoria Maureen Ball and Father Time before the Mystics of Time parade began. Father Time was chosen by the group’s members based on his service to the organization, and the queen is usually an unmarried relative of Father Time. We’ll be sharing more of @damonwinter’s photos from #Mobile later today.
