If you wanted to visit the childhood home of Rosa Parks in Alabama or Malcolm X in Nebraska, you’d have to settle for a historical marker. That’s because their houses were demolished before preservationists could save them, as many other African-American historical sites have been. It’s a fate that easily could have met this 3-room home in Tryon, North Carolina. Until a few years ago, many locals didn’t even know its significance: Nina Simone was born here. Now, though, the singer’s birthplace is in good hands. Over the last month, 4 prominent artists pooled their money and bested competing bids to snatch it up for $95,000. They describe their purchase as an act of art, but also of politics — a gratifying chance to respond to what they see as a deeper racial divide in America. “It took me about 5 seconds to know what I wanted to do,” said the conceptualist Adam Pendleton, who @travisdovephoto photographed outside the house. Adam teamed up with artists Julie Mehretu, @rashidjohnson and Ellen Gallagher. “She formed a lot of who I am and my sense of history,” Ellen, a collagist and filmmaker, said of #NinaSimone. “And I think of the town as a portal to a woman who influenced so many.”
